The Compass Within: Integrative Psychotherapy with Thérèse Gallant
I believe that everyone knows deep within what they need and what direction that they need to follow in order to improve their lives. We all have the ability to access our inner knowing, our inner wisdom. At times in life this knowledge is difficult to access. Sometimes we don’t have the knowledge or experience in human relationships to navigate situations. I see my job as a therapist to assist an individual to find their own path that fits with their values to resolve life’s challenges.
I use therapeutic processes from the schools of humanistic and person-centred psychology, cognitive behavioural techniques, strength based, and solution focused as well as mindfulness, energy and somatic-based methods which include experiential exercises and guided imagery. I also have training in clinical hypnotherapy which accesses the creative unconscious mind.
I believe that humans are multi faceted beings that include a body, mind, emotions and spirit. To heal requires a holistic approach. In therapy, we discuss your therapeutic goals and we decide together how to get there. I use my training and knowledge to help you in a way that is comfortable and suitable for you, in order to achieve your goals.
I am deeply interested in helping people to find their center point, especially at this time in history where much of what we know is changing. To me, finding meaning and stability from within is part of the solution to radiant, joyful mental health. I see myself as a helper to you taking charge of your life.
My formal education is a Masters Degree in Education (Counselling Psychology) from the University of Ottawa, graduate diploma from St Paul University in Individual Counselling, Bachelor of Arts from Mount Allison University, certificate in Natural Health from the Canadian College of Natural Healing and a certificate in Clinical Hypnotherapy with Daybreak Training and Therapy. I have continued education regularly in the forms of trainings and workshops.
The past 20 plus years I have worked as a counsellor /therapist in the following employment settings: Family Service Moncton, the New Brunswick Teacher’s Association, various Employee Assistance Programs and over 10 years in private practice. I have worked with families, couples and individuals.
The areas that I would consider myself knowledgeable in are stress related conditions including anxiety, lack of energy, burnout, balancing work and life; relationship issues between parent and child, couples, separation and blended families; transitions and life changes including grief and loss. I particularly enjoy assisting individuals to explore meaning, purpose and direction in their lives.
I am a licensed member of the College of Counselling Therapists of New Brunswick. It is a licensing body that oversees counselling therapists in NB. I am also a certified member with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.
